the difference between wet and dry gorilla trekking
Gorilla trekking is a year-round activity that can be done both during the dry season and the rainy season. Choosing when to go for the trekking of these great giants in their natural habitats will majorly depend on what you are really interested in and what other activity you want to add on the trekking.
However, there are some differences in challenges you will face while trekking gorillas either during the wet season or dry season. The factors below are some of things you have to consider while choosing when to go for gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda.
The difference in distance to be trekked: dry season Vs wet season
During rainy season, there is abundancy of food in forests. Gorillas tend to feed on bamboo shootings and fruits which tend to be in plenty the wet season. Mind you, the reason why gorillas move long distances is to find food during day. Therefore, with food in abundancy, gorilla will move for a short distance which will translate into trekking a shorter distance before encountering gorillas.
On the other hand, during the dry season, there is a food scarcity for gorillas which means they will for a very long distance which trekking before encountering gorillas long and hectic. Therefore, if you are interested in covering a short distance during trekking, wet season might turnout to be better.
Difference in terrains: Dry season Vs wet season
During dry season the terrains are dry and passable which facilitate in the movement while searching for the gentle giants of east Africa. Furthermore, the thickness of the forest especially at Bwindi impenetrable forest National Park is a little limited which contribute on the challenges you will face while trekking
On the other hand, during the wet season terrains tend to be very muddy and impassable which will necessitate you to have the specialized shoes to support you while going through the trails as you are searching for the mountain gorillas. On top of that, due to heavy rains, the forest especially the Bwindi Forest is very thick which adds on the difficult of trekking through it.
Difference in accommodation demand: High season vs low season
Dry season is taken to be a peak season which with an increase in accommodation demand as thousands of travelers come to East Africa to spend there vacations here. Therefore, you will be necessitated to prepare you safari a little earlier to avoid last time disappointment and the chances of staying in unconducive lodges. Furthermore, during this time there is no discount offered as the demand is so high to allow search advantages. Therefore, for a less challenging trekking dry season is the best.
On the other hand, wet season are associated with the low demand in accommodation which result into service having empty rooms. Furthermore, the service providers will be competing for the few clients who will travel to Rwanda and Uganda. As a result, various incentives including discounts are offered to the clients to make sure that they choose the given lodge/hotel. Therefore, for better accommodation travelling in wet season is advisable.
Gorilla permit demand and congestion during trekking: Low vs high season
Whether low season or high season, habituated gorilla families must be visited to ensure that they don’t get disassociated to people. During dry season which is at the same time a peak season almost all gorilla family will be fully booked, this will come with a higher competition for the nice photo shoot hence not getting a very clear photo. Furthermore, if you interest is to travel in dry season make sure that your permit is booked in advance as there won’t be or at least there is limited chance of getting a last-minute permit.
However, during the wet season due to low demand for permit, with few people participating in trekking, you are likely to be very few people trekking each group. This will avail you with the nice photo spot. On top of that, even the last-minute traveler can book and get their permit for trekking the great gentle giants of Uganda Rwanda and Congo.
Difference in clarity of visibility and weather
During the wet season, the sky tends to froggy which affect the visibility and the of the picture during the photo shoot. More on that is the unpredictable weather change. As a must during this season always move with the raincoat as the weather can change any time and the rain falls. Be prepared for the rain whenever you for the trekking during this time of the year.
On the other hand, dry season is characterized with the clear skies with less flogs. This will improve the quality of the pictures you will take while on your great adventure. Furthermore, it is less likely to face the rain during this season but that doesn’t mean that the rain will never fall. So be prepared for the rain in case it happen to fall during this time of the year.
