Bigodi wetland sanctuary is situated in the heart of Uganda’s kibale national park with in Magombe swamp, is among the popular areas known for its eco system and vibrant wildlife.  The park is also referred to as home for the Great Turaco.

The wetland is a haven for bird watchers and researchers with over 300 bird species. The sanctuary is also a home to many primate species including the monkey species.

Primates

Many primate species call Bigodi wetland a home due to its rich eco systems. Some of them include Black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, vervet, grey -cheeked mangabey, olive baboons and red-tailed monkeys. Chimpanzees can also be seen since Kibale forest national park is very nearby.

Mammals.

Bigodi sanctuary still serves as a home to different mammal species. Some of the mammals to see include Sitatunga, bush pigs, Bushbucks and also mongoose.  Some of the reptiles to see include snakes, Lizards, frogs and many more.

Nature walks.

This is the most popular activity done within this amazing sanctuary. Nature walks involve tourists being led by a local guide who walks around with them as they explore different attractions such as animals, birds, and plants. Tourists are able to identity different vegetation zones.

The wetland has various routes to follow especially during nature walks.  Some of the birds to see while in the sanctuary include Grey crowned cranes, Papyrus Gonolek, Blue breasted Kingfisher, Yellow Billed Barbet, African Grey Parrots, Western Nicator, White spotted Flufftail, and many others. Nature walks in Bigodi Sanctuary are indeed rewarding since they connect tourists with nature.

Birdwatching

Birdwatching is among the best birding destinations with in the pearl of Africa. The sanctuary is a birder paradise with over 300 bird species including the endemics and migratory. Different birds find the sanctuary a suitable breeding ground for their life. Examples of birds to spot with in the sanctuary include African pitta, yellow spotted nicator, Blue breasted Kingfisher, Black capped Apalis, Abyssinian ground thrush, Dusky crimsonwing, yellow-rumped tinker bird.

Community walks

One of the common activities done with in Bigodi wetland sanctuary include the community walks. Community walks involve tourists visiting the people in the community learn more about how they go about their activities and many more.

In the communities tourists can participate in various activities for instance learn how to cook the local cuisines, visit different plantations like the coffee, tea where you get vast research about these cash crops.

Community walks also involve visiting medicine men who used different local herbs to treat people in the ancient times.
