Nasera rock in Ngorongoro conservation area

The Nasera rock is a magnificent 50 meters high inselberg located in the southwestern part of the Gol Mountains. This rock is covered by drawings which are said to have been made during the ancient times when the area was used as temporary settlements.

The Nasera rock is located at a distance of about 20km north of Olduvai Gorge a few kilometers away from the shifting sand located behind the Gol Mountains. It came to be named Nasera by the Masaai after a famous word in their dialect Naasira that means striped, written, or drawn.

It is the only known fully exposed inselberg in the region and has rocks that are the same age as those present in the South Hills and the Bao site.

The Nasera rock has been internationally recognized through decades for its archaeological resources that have been excavated since the 1930s.

Most travelers visit these rocks so as to spot the rock painting or climb them to the top and enjoy the magnificent views of the nearby plains. While on the top of the rocks, one is able to have an all-round 360 degrees view of the surrounding plains making it a good spot for bird watching as well as spotting the wildebeest migration herd while in this area.

Best time to visit the Nasera rock

The Nasera rock can be visited throughout the year for all the activities. The better time to visit this area however is during the month of December when the wildebeest migration is within this region. This implies you will come across larger crowds in this area during this time of year. The wet season though is a bit challenging due to the slippery paths and heavy rains.

How to get to the Nasera rock

The Nasera rock can be accessed by road with a half an hour drive northwards from the Olduvai Gorge museum or an hours’ drive from Naabi hell’s gate. It can also be reached from any point from within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area since it’s where it’s located and as a result, permits are required to access the Nasera rock.
