Wildebeest do not have a permanent mating partner. During the mating period, male wildebeest tend to create territories and attract females to their territories using different antics and behaviours. Male wildebeest protect their territories against any male intruder during this time. the advantage the male wildebeest have is that their number is smaller than that of the female wildebeest. In the end, this result into one male wildebeest having many female partners

When do wildebeest do mate

Wildebeest usually mate towards the end of wet season when food is in abundancy. During this time of the year animals are well fed and are at the peak of their fittest levels. Between may and July is the usually the period when rainy season in Tanzania and in the most African parts end. Therefore, it is not a coincidence that this is the most likely period when wildebeest mate. During this time of the year, usually wildebeest would have moved to the central serengeti heading towards the northern part of the park.

This imply that the mating will more likely take place while wildebeest still in the central of the park and for those interested in experiencing this period, you should plan your safari within this time of the year.

How long does oestrus period of wildebeest last?

Oestrous period is the time when the female wildebeest is ready to conceive. This period usually last for around 23 days per female wildebeest. The beauty is it is not that all wildebeest are ready to conceive at the same time. as we have earlier seen, the general period is of about two and half months. This gives the few male wildebeests to mate with all mature and ready female wildebeest.

The female in the oestrus period will join the territory of their preferred male partner where they will be impregnated.

How long does gestation period of wildebeest last?

The gestation period of the wildebeest last between 250 days and 260 days which is approximately 9 months, and they will give birth to a calve that will way around 21 kilos. This explains why the calving season takes place between January and march. The newborn wildebeest will start walking just few minutes after being born. During the gestation period, the oestrus cycle is altered until after the reproduction just like in the human beings and other mammals.

The calving season peak for two to three weeks, and after that the number of calves produced will drop. The motility rate will of newborns will range between 20 percent to 50 percent and they are more vulnerable to the spotted hyenas and other hungry big cats that usually follow these wildebeest

Crossbreeding between blue wildebeest and black wildebeest

There is the rare cases of cross breeding of blue wildebeest and black wildebeest. This has put the existence of black wildebeest in danger as the product of crossbreeding is blue wildebeest.

The migration nature of wildebeest

Not all wildebeest migrate. Blue wildebeest are more nomadic and move from one place to another through out the year. However, the black wildebeest that dominates the Ngorongoro are less nomadic and tend to occupy the same territory throughout the year. The blue wildebeest are more nomadic and keeps on moving from one place to another while creating different territories. This explains why they usually occupy a wider geographical area as they are supposed to be moving all the year round.
