Mountain Sabinyo Located spanning three different borders in East and Central Africa, i.e Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo, Mount Sabinyo is an extinct Volcano elevated at 3,645 metres (11,959 ft) and located West of Lake Bunyonyi in Uganda and North East of the prominent Lake Kivu. The Mountain obtained its name from the Kinyarwanda word “Irinyo” meaning Tooth and can be viewed in three different National parks i.e Volcanoes National park Rwanda, Virunga National park and Mgahinga National Park Uganda. The slopes of Mount Sabinyo are a habitat to the prominent Mountain Gorillas as well as other candid wildlife mammal species and birds. While at the top of the beautiful Mountain, you will have magnificent views of Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo since the Mountain is considered the axis of the virunga Ranges. Hiking Process Mount Sabinyo Hikes are organized from the Ugandan Side in Mgahinga National Park located South West of Uganda and those interested can hike to the top of the three peaks depending on their physical fitness and a hike to each of the three peaks takes a period of 8 hours. The hiking process is done in Uganda alone due to the numerous sharp ridges along the Mountain and in Uganda; handmade ladders have been provided to enable hikers get to the top of the Mountain especially around the very steep regions. The hike will take you a one day for a period of 8 hours 4 hours hiking and 4 hours descending depending on the weather and climate at the time. The process starts from the park office where you will be briefed about the whole process then later, you will be given walking sticks for free and if you want a porter, you will pay US $15- $25. The Hike rewards you an opportunity to spot the rare Golden Monkeys as well as other wildlife animals like Elephants, Buffalo and Mountain Gorillas. For avid birders around the world should not miss out on this adventure due to the fact that the Mountain has the prominent Great Rwenzori Turaco.
