Nyungwe National Park, located in the southwestern part of Rwanda and has a rich biodiversity ranging from flora to fauna. This park seats on 1,015 sq kilometers and is the largest tropical afro montane rain forest remaining in East Africa. It has over 85 mammal,310 bird,1,050 plant,120 butterfly and 38 reptile species which makes it an ideal place to visit. Its unique suspended bridge (the Nyungwe canopy) has also put it at another advantage making many people want to come and explore its beauty.
CANOPY WALK
This takes about 2 hours from the starting point at Uwinka walking on the 200 meters long trail which is 50 meters above the forest cover and 74meters above the ground which gives amazing panoramic views that ground nature walks cannot give. This is a thrilling adventurous walk that one should not miss out as it’s one of Nyungwe iconic activities. Canopy walk fees are $10 for Rwandan and East African citizens, $60 for foreign residents in east Africa and African citizens then $100 for international visitors.
CHIMPANZEE TREKKING
A chimpanzee trekking permit in Nyungwe national park is $150 to international visitors, $75 to foreign residents and $25 to east African citizen. The population of chimpanzees here is second to those in Kibale National Park in Uganda and is 25% of the primate species in Africa. For a successful trek, one must remember to carry sturdy hiking shoes because of the slippery terrain, a poncho in the likelihood of it raining, long sleeved shirts because of the cold weather and long trousers for protection from the creeping plants in case you go out of the way. Another essential are the binoculars to get better views of those playful chimpanzees high in the trees.
COLOBUS MONKEY TREKKING.
A colobus monkey trekking permit cost $40 per individual. As one hikes in the park, there is a high likelihood of meeting a group of up to 200 Rwenzori Colobus Monkeys once you slightly move away from the cut trails. Nyungwe national park has various primate species of which the biggest percentage is that of monkey species. Some of the monkey species that one is likely to meet along the trails include Owl faced monkeys, blue monkeys, Mona monkeys, Rey -cheeked Mangabeys and, L’Hoest monkeys.
BIRD WATCHING
This is one of the top bird watching destinations in Rwanda with over 310 bird species and it has rare unique species like the Great blue turaco, Re-throated Alethe, Gigantic Forest hornbill and the Paradise flycatcher. The nature of the terrain is forested which may be a bit hard to spot some bird species and, on that note, its advised to go with an experiences guide accustomed to be bird calls for easy spotting. The forest is so huge with a number of trails and therefore it’s advisable to use more of those trails to be able to spot many bird species. The fee for this activity is $50 for foreign nonresidents, $40 for foreign residents and 5000 Rwandan francs for Rwandan citizens and east Africans.
HIKING
There are 13 hiking trails which offer a wide range of experiences each different from the other in the park for hiking which takes about 1 to 8 hours where one catches a glimpse of various species such as the primates, birds, trees, butterflies. The shortest trail is Igishigishigi which can also be used to access the Canopy Walk. The trail takes about 8hours and is called Bigugu.
