In 1904, Coffee was introduced to Rwanda by the missionaries. Rwanda’s potential for high quality coffee production was recognized and progressed to become significant cash crop with the first cooperatives established in 1930.

With time, coffee production in Rwanda expanded to exporting over 45,000 tons annually. In recent years, Rwanda is known and recognized for its distinct and high-quality coffee production with over 450,000 coffee growers/famers contributing to the industry.

High quality Arabia Coffee is produced using various processing methods that meet international standards of Specialty Coffee Association as well as Cup of excellence.

Coffee Growing Regions in Rwanda

Coffee is grown in various regions across Rwanda and some of the main areas in which coffee is grown include, Akagera Region which is characterized by low mountains, rich and fertile soils, Kivu Region on the volcanic slopes bordering with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Other Regions where Coffee is grown in Rwanda include the Virunga Region, the Northern Province with citrus and stone fruit coffees. Kizi Rift Region is another region known for high quality coffee as we well as the Muhazi Region which is located a few kilometers east of Kigali. The Southern Province which is situated on a high altitude produces sweet coffee with classic floral flavors.

Coffee Harvesting and Processing

Coffee Harvesting is one of the Highlights of a coffee tour in Rwanda. Harvesting involves selective hand picking where only ripe, red coffee beans are picked. It is Another method is strip-picking where all beans are removed from the tree. Some of the harvesting tools used include Baskets, small knives and small Gloves for protection. You can actively take part or engage with the local farmers in hand picking the ripe and fine cherries. The experience gives you a story to tell about the unique and exquisite coffee in Rwanda.

Coffee roasting and tasting

The art of roasting combines traditional and modern methods. The roasting levels include Light roasting, Medium Roasting with balanced acidity, sweet and caramel like flavors as well as the dark Roast.  The experts will take us through the process of coffee roasting, offering you an experience of coffee roasting and tasting.

You will visit a coffee roastery to connect with the real essence of Rwandan coffee as you witness the transformation of the coffee beans into bright, fruity and floral notes, sweet and caramel like flavors.

Connecting with the Local Communities
