Dos and Don’ts on African safari amidst the threat of mpox

Mpox formally known as Monkey pox is an infectious disease for both human and animals. The symptom for Mpox include the skin rush that will transform into blisters and then crusts. You will also get a fever and swollen lymph nodes. The illness tends to be mild and takes between 5 days to a month to heal. You are likely to heal without requiring the treatment in many cases. The time of exposure before symptoms appear ranges between 5 to 21 days.

The risk of severe cases is most likely to appear in pregnant women, children and people with a poor immune the system or preexisting healthy conditions. Human to human transmission can only occur through direct contact with the effected person. While animal to human transmission is through handling of infected meat, being bitten by the infected animal or getting in direct contact with the infected animal.

Mpox was declared a world healthy emergency by WHO on 16 August 2024. After it being detected in some East and Central Africa countries which include Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya and Central African Republic.

To ensure your safety on your African safari, we have designed a guideline to be followed on your safari. Remember Mpox is not an airborne disease (it is a contact disease that transmit through cuttings on the body). There preventing it is not that difficult. We only have to follow the established guidelines. Below are the guidelines to be followed on your safari:

Avoid unprotected contact with wild animals

On your safari where the protective gears and musk to avoid getting into a direct contact with the animals you will meet. Remember mpox is a contact disease so getting into contact with the infected animal might result into you also getting infected.

Cook your meat thoroughly

If you are intending to have a meal containing meat. Make sure that it is properly and effectively cooked before eating it. This will guarantee the killing of the virus in case the meat was contaminated. Regardless of whether its you are cooking for yourself on your chief, ensure that at no time you eat half cooked meat.

Consider getting vaccinated against mpox

Unfortunately, there is currently no designated vaccine for mpox cut it has proved that smallpox vaccine is effective even for mpox. (it offers approximately 85% protection). If possible before coming on your African especially if your immune is weak. Take two vaccine doses of smallpox to remove any risk of getting infected while enjoying your once in lifetime adventure.

Avoid random sex

One of the ways through which mpox is transmitted is sex, it can be normal sex, gay sex or sex that bring the two skins together. Therefore, having any kind of sex with the stranger is likely to expose into getting affected by the mpox. There we advise at least for now to avoid having a random sex with the stranger.

Avoid a skin-to-skin contact.

If you are in areas where mpox has been declared, try to avoid a skin to skin contact. In African culture they tend to great while exchanging hands or giving each other hugs. It might look mean of you to deny this social behavior but for you safety decline these behavior. At least for now especially is you are not yet vaccinated.

Wash your hands regularly.

Use either a sanitizer or a washing soap with water to wash your hand regularly especially after touching on a person or a public place where many people exchange hand. By cleaning your hand regularly, you will be able to kill the virus in case of having contacted it

There is no need to cancel your once in a lifetime African safari. We just have to follow the above stated guidelines to ensure that you are safe and healthy while on your great adventure.
