The Lolmalasin Mountain is the highest standing crater mountain in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It is the third tallest mountain in Tanzania after mountain Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru and it’s the second highest peak in Arusha after mountain Kilimanjaro standing at about 3700 meters above sea level. It is located on the Eastern border of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area near the Olmoti crater en route to Empakaai crater and is the source of the Simiyu River that flows west into Lake Victoria.

The Lolmalasin Mountain holds great significance to the local Masaai people who have lived in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for centuries. This tribe considers this mountain a sacred area of great cultural and spiritual significance. The vegetation surrounding this area provides habitat for numerous wildlife species such as elephants, buffaloes, among others and different species.

The main activity while visiting the Lolmalasin is the Lolmalasin mountain hike. This begins with an ascent through the diverse landscapes of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area made of grass plains, dense forests, and rocky highlands. This trek however is quite challenging due to the altitude and variation in terrain but the awarding breathtaking view upon summiting it makes it worth every effort.

Whereas the wet season that runs from March to May and early October to November is characterized with heavy rains, muddy trails, and thick bushes that are not ideal for hiking.
