The Kilimanjaro Mountain is the highest standing mountain in Africa at an altitude of 5895 meters above sea level. This mountain can be hiked through the Lemosho route, Machame route, Rongai route, and the Marangu route and these hikes range between 5 days and 9 days. The hike to Uhuru peak is not a beginner’s hike therefore require a bit of hiking experience, a good health condition, and with the help of the porters and experienced guides, you will undoubtfully summit Kilimanjaro.

The cost of hiking Mount Kilimanjaro is attributed to a number of factors such as the price of the guides, tents, porters, food, choice of trail, and park entrances. The prices charged for hiking Mount Kilimanjaro range from 2000USD to 7000USD per person with Kilimanjaro National Park entrance taking up the biggest expense at a cost of about 200USD per person per day. This price is inclusive of;

  • Conservation Fees – The Kilimanjaro National Park authority collects a fee of 70USD per person for each day spent inside the park. This cost is a must incur cost for a Kilimanjaro hiking experience.
  • Campsite Fees – For the Machame route, Rongai route, Lemosho route, and hut fees for the Marangu route. This fee ranges between 50USD to 60USD per hut/campsite each night, per person. For a 7 days Machame route, this cost will take up close to 300USD of the total cost of the hike.
  • Guide & Porters fee – Since it’s nearly impossible to individually carry your hiking equipment and personal belongings during the hike, a fee that ranges between 7USD to 10USD per day is charged on the total Kilimanjaro hike cost to cater for the guides and porters. This price however varies depending on the equipment carried on the hike and size of the group.
  • Park Entrance fees – Kilimanjaro National park charges 50USD as park entrance per person for each day of access. Therefore for a 7-day Machame hike, a fee of 350USD is added to the total hiking cost to cater for park entrance fees.
  • Rescue fees – A fee of 20USD is added onto each hikers total cost. This is to cater for any unforeseen occurrences during the hike that will require rescue by KINAPA.
  • Taxes and VAT – The Tanzanian government charges 18% VAT to all Kilimanjaro safaris any operator makes therefore this cost is included in every Kilimanjaro hike.

Other than the above mentioned items, additional costs to a Kilimanjaro hiking safari may arise from hire of hiking equipment such as tents, sleeping bags, trekking poles among others, transportation to the mountain from the airport, and accommodation within the nearby towns such as Moshi and Arusha, among others.

However, most times there is a difference in the price of a Kilimanjaro hiking experience, and this is brought about by a number of factors such as;

Kilimanjaro mountain

The size of the group

The larger the number of people in the group, the lower the price per person. People in a group of about 10 individuals will pay a lot less compared to a group of 2 individuals or a solo traveler since in the group of 10 the cost is shared among more people.

Number of days spent on the mountain

The cost of the Kilimanjaro Hike is highly attributed to the number of time one spends on the mountain. Each day on the mountain incurs additional costs in park fees, staff wages, food and hiking equipment. Therefore, the longer routes that take more days are much more expensive than the shorter routes that require fewer days.

Choice of service category (Budget, Midrange or Luxury)

This brings about the largest discrepancy in the cost of hiking Mount Kilimanjaro. This is because luxury clients may opt for a more luxurious hiking experience thereby incurring additional costs and budget clients will require the tour operators to cut a number of corners for a cheaper hiking experience hence having a less expensive hiking experience.

Some of the high costs of Kilimanjaro hikes arise as an inflation in prices by luxury tour operators. Since all tour operators who do Kilimanjaro hikes need to have been licensed therefore most tour agents in western countries outsource local operators when planning a Kilimanjaro hike which in most cases leads to a higher cost.
