Also known as Wahadzabe tribe in Swahili, Hadzabe is an indigenous tribe with little modification to their way of life for centuries. The Hadzabe live in Northern Tanzania in Baray, Karatu district, southwest of Arusha. It is one of the last tribe of hunters and gatherers in East Africa, Africa and the world at large. As a result of their hunting and gathering lifestyle, the Hadzabe tribe does not keep livestock nor grow their own food.

The history of Hadzabe tribe

The Hadzabe tribe is said to have very few people of about 1200 to 1300 individuals. This tribe lives around Lake Eyasi basin located in the central rift valley and the neighboring Serengeti plateau. It is believed that they were the first inhabitants of Serengeti before the area was taken over by the Masaai tribe. The Hadzabe tribe is organized in groups known as camps of about 20 to 30 individuals and all individuals in the groups are equal whether male or female however during certain times of the year such as the dry seasons, they form groups of 100 or even more.

Land encroaches of Hadzabe land

Ninety percent of the land of the Hadzabe tribe has been encroached by the neighboring tribes and as a result this tribe travels long distances from their settlement to hunt animals. Due to their nomadic way of life, the Hadzabe people have a few possessions that they can carry on their backs as they move from place to place roughly about 6 times a year and settle in temporary shelters of dried grass and branches.

The Hadzabe speak a unique language known as the Hadzane characterized by a clicking and popping sound like the Khoisan language of the South African Bushmen.

There way of life of Hadzabe people

This tribe still live life traditionally the way people lived more than a million years ago. There have been several attempts from different groups such as governments and missionaries to influence their way of life but have failed to assimilate them since they thrive to continue living in their traditional manner.

The Hadzabe spend most of their time making bows and arrows or hunting. The arrows are made using old nails they obtain from the neighboring Datoga tribe through barter trade during which the Hadzabe people give meat and honey to the Datoga tribe in exchange for the nails.

Sometimes the nails are also obtained from tourists who visit their villages. This tribe is extremely skilled in using bows and arrows when hunting. Their favorite games are baboons and impalas since they mainly make their clothing using the impala skin. Other than these, they also feed on birds and other animals such as bush babies, lions, bush pigs, among others.
