To trek mountain gorillas in Rwanda, you need to possess a valid permit that can be purchased from either Rwanda development board, the body responsible for Rwanda tourism activities or through your trusted tour operator. The gorilla permit goes for 1500 dollars per person and will give an hour with the gorillas in the wild.

The gorilla trekking experience at Volcanoes

Gorilla trekking refer to the process of encountering these endangered great apes in their natural habitats. Gorillas can be trekked either from volcanoes national park, Mgahinga gorillas national park, Virunga national park or Bwindi impenetrable forest national park.

The activity starts very early in the morning at the park headquarter which is kinigi headquarter in case of Rwanda’s volcano national park. It’s from the briefing where you learn about the rules and regulations to follow while in the forest. The activity usually takes around 2 to 3 hours, but this depends on the location of the gorilla family you are allocated to trek.

Trekking involves a group of 8 people to visit the jungle. Hiking in the jungle involves passing through the steep slopes, hilly mountains, as you search for the gorillas. Once the gorillas are found, only one hour is offered to the trekkers to spend with these magnificent giants of east Africa.

CHIMPANZEES IN RWANDA

Beside mountain gorillas, you can also trek another great apes which is the chimpanzees in their natural habitats. Chimpanzees in Rwanda can either be trekked from either Nyungwe national park or Gishwati-Mukura national park

Nyungwe is also home to over 500 bird specie and other primates including black and white colobus monkey, l’host monkey, vervet monkey and many more. Whereas Gishwati-Mukura national park also offers golden monkey trekking beside Chimpanzee trekking.

Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe starts with a briefing very early in the morning at the park main head quarters at Uwinka visitors center.

After the briefing, you join a group of guides and other fellow tourists to go and trek the chimpanzees in the forest. Once trekkers locate the chimpanzees, only one hour is offered to spend with them while observing their behavior and daily interactions.

Cost of the chimpanzee permit

The current cost of a chimpanzee permit in Rwanda is $250 for foreign non residents, $75 for foreign residents and then $25 for East Africans. The many is paid to either Rwanda Development board or through your trusted tour operator.

Mount Gahinga
